PILOT GUIDE
Ready for your first class.
A quick guide to getting started, choosing the right student link, and helping when something gets in the way.
Choose your starting point
- Upmark — sign in as a teacher, create a class and assessment, then create and open a session. Share the student link for no-account student entry.
- QuizCraft — prepare or import questions, review the result, and export the quiz file for your learning platform. Conversion does not require a student account.
- Perch installation — install the Chrome extension before class and test a short Quick Check. Share the session link generated by Perch.
- Markback installation — install the Chrome extension, add your Anthropic API key, and open Canvas SpeedGrader. Review feedback before applying it.
Common questions
Where do students go?
For an Upmark assessment, use classworklab.com and the join code. Students enter a display name without an account. Students already on a class roster can use the school sign-in link if their teacher asks them to. Perch activities use the separate link supplied by the Perch extension.
My student’s code isn’t working.
Check that the code matches the current session and that the teacher has opened the session for joining. Scheduled, closed, or ended sessions will not accept a new student. A Perch extension code will not work in the Upmark join form.
A teacher signs in but sees the student screen.
Teacher access is enabled for invited pilot email addresses. Use the exact account your pilot organizer added. Contact the organizer if another email needs access, then sign out and sign back in after the update.
A student is using a shared device.
Check the name displayed before joining. Use “Not you? Start as a different learner” if the device remembers another student. If a school account is signed in, sign out of the application before handing the device to another learner.
The browser lost its connection or the activity paused.
Restore the connection and follow the on-screen prompt. Ask the teacher to check the session if approval is needed to return. An interruption can have ordinary device or network causes; it is not evidence of misconduct.
Chrome won’t install the extension.
Extract the ZIP first, then select the folder containing manifest.json with Load unpacked. If your school disables that option, ask your technology team to approve installation. Perch and Markback need Chrome extension support; they do not run in a phone browser.
Get help with the pilot
Contact the teacher or colleague who shared these tools with you. Include the tool name, the time, the page you were on, and the error message. Leave out student responses, passwords, API keys, and private join links.
For privacy, data export, deletion, or school agreement requests, contact your pilot organizer. The Upmark Trust Center explains how assessment data is handled.
The teacher in the room is still the real control.
